2013: That Was The Year That Was (2/2)
...
And we're back.
I'm counting down the best (and worst) bits from 2013. So without further ado, here's July to December.
July
I spent most of July working at the BBC Science Radio Unit (work placement for Science Communication course). I would like to say I enjoyed every minute - but I was bloody terrified for the first week. However, after discovering how friendly and helpful everybody who works there are, I settled in and started to really enjoy my time there. I researched a story about an invading fish for Science in Action, a story about the use of Facebook in spotting disease for Click and I researched and helped plan a documentary about de-extinction. (I also recorded and produced some vox pops for a Click special about internet trolls)…
Oh! And I pretended to be from Kenya to read out a listener's email...
The highlight of my work experience was getting a feature article about de-extinction published on the BBC News website.
August
My 25th birthday brought an unhealthy (but tasty) amount of Dim Sum! It was great to hang out with my old and my new course friends!
Otherwise, August was a quiet affair - a trip up to Yorkshire and a start on my dissertation.
September
Handed my dissertation in. If you're interested in art and science relationships then ask me for a copy (I didn't get a great mark for it, but I enjoyed making it).
I also got geeky. On more than one occasion.
October
Sadly (but also happily) the science communication, which I had been excitedly waiting for for 4 years!, came to an end. I had a great year and met some totally awesome friends (who I will keep in contact with!). And with that, my #JobHuntLive and #JobHuntHaiku began!
I also wrote a silly poem (inspired by the great Bo Burnham) about searching for the perfect job. I think the "poetry" must have gone to my head because I wrote another poem about the discovery of z8_GND_5296 - an extremely distant galaxy.
Another person with ideas above their station was Russell Brand, who seemed to suggest that a full blown revolution is required. I wrote a post about why I think he is wrong.
November
A tough month. Job searching got me down. Highlights include making this little teaser showreel for my friends Chris and Annie.
And of course, Chris, Dave and I set up our Musings Podcast. I think really great things will happen with this so watch this space!
December
An even tougher month. Started the month newly single and wrote a poem trying to explain how the relationship breakup made me feel.
Moped around and was generally a disgrace to my normal, upbeat self.
Two days before the Christmas break, I was offered a job! This was the glimmer of optimism I needed to get my life projects back on track and I can't wait to continue communicating science in 2014.
Made this optimistic timelapse video on Christmas eve. Who doesn't like a good sunrise?
Also watch this space for my new art-science podcast and blog. I'm currently building my website, but I aim to have this finished by mid-january.
