Vague actions and ideas showers (Sprint 2 Review)

I've taken it a bit easier this sprint - and I think this is something I need to bear in mind with future sprints.

It's all very well completing lots of stories each sprint, but I think I need to be a bit braver with the tasks that I assign to myself. I also need to give myself more specific tasks. The whole reason I want to live 2017 through a series of sprints is that I want to build new stuff, without the anxiety that comes when faced with a task that on the face of it looks impossible. Take a look at the backlog for my second sprint.

There are three items on there that are too vague. Phrases like "figure out purpose" and "brainstorm" are too easy for me to claim that I've done something. I can easily pretend that I've 'figured out the purpose' of my CV website after I've thought about it a bit and drawn a couple of wireframes in my notebook.

Instead I should have worded the task in a way that helped me to understand what a completed task would look like. Something like, 'Construct wireframe and sitemap for CV website'.  I have tried to do this with the additional tasks that I've broken my 'Build CV website' epic into.

When planning social, fun times with friends, I've found that I tend to ask my friends once about an event and then claim that my 'plan event' task is complete. Perhaps this is just a case of rewording the tasks, but really, I think I still need to work on keeping in touch with my friends.

Sprint review

Although dealing with ambiguous, vague tasks, I still do have products at the end of this sprint.

  • I've decided to continue using Blogger as the CMS for my CV website. Go Daddy offers a really reasonable price on URLs and there seems to be plenty of help for redirecting URLs to a Blogger-based website.
  • My CV website will be a collection of my publications, links out to news stories, videos and podcasts that I've produced. I will include this blog on my website.
  • I've half-planned a board games night with some friends. I'm hoping to play Twilight Imperium with them - a game that requires exactly 6 players - so making sure everyone is available to play has been tricky.
  • I booked time off on Monday to watch the Superbowl.
  • I've asked for dates to help me plan a cycle tour to Munich.
  • I fixed the sprint burndown chart on my previous blog post. I'd originally set the chart up to update automatically, so I had to revert to a previous draft and ensure I was pulling through an image, rather than an updating burndown chart.

I've achieved less this sprint than last. I think my main blocker was that I shuffled tasks into and out of my sprint, so I didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted to achieve.
